CONTENT TITLE
Virtual Star Trek is a fan-produced hub of online 'virtual Trek'. Made up over four distinct online, script-based virtual television series' set in the Star Trek universe, Virtual Star Trek is the first project of its kind. Each of its four virtual series uses the script format to tell their stories, rather than the more familiar prose style used by most other online series'. Episodes are released according to seasons, running about the same length as a standard television series. Each episode is released in a full-length teleplay in PDF format made available for download via the various series' own web site, and through the project's main page.
The four series representing Virtual Star Trek have varying degrees of experience. Star Trek: Renaissance began in September of 2001, and is currently in its 4th season. Star Trek: Frontiers began in May of 2004 and is nearing its 2nd season finale, expected to be released in July. Star Trek: Star's End will premiere on July 29th with its pilot episode "Ekuseni," and the project's latest series, Virtual Enterprise, picks up where the recently canceled Star Trek: Enterprise left off, and is set to premiere this fall. Each series, with the exception of Virtual Enterprise, follows a unique and original cast of characters, and is set in its own 'universe' separate from one another, but still part of the established Star Trek canon.
"Virtual Star Trek is a place for fans to come to in the knowledge that they're about to read a decent episode of Star Trek. We're not limited by the budgets of fan films, or the budget of Paramount for that matter, and for the most part the story is told in or around sixty pages of script -- a lot more easily digestible than even twenty pages of solid prose, in our opinion. We'd like to invite people to check out the less popular script format and see what they think." Renaissance executive producer, and creator of Virtual Star Trek, Rob Jelley said of the project.
"At the same time though, VST isn't just a place for people to come and read fan fiction, it's a place for people to come and write it. When Renaissance was created back in 2001, one of the key ideas was that it would provide a training ground for new writers, so that they could hone and develop their skills in public. This takes that idea one step further." he continued.
Frontiers show-runner Joshua Maley notes that "We keep hearing, 'the franchise is tired, it needs a break' and 'if we keep going forward, what happens, the spandex gets tighter'... I don't buy any of it. There are myriad quality stories waiting in the twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth centuries. One look at a script from any of our post-Nemesis series is proof positive that Star Trek's future has barely been written. The franchise doesn't need a break, it needs people who still have a passion for it. People who wake up in the morning and still believe in the power of this unique vision of the future. People who want to make something more than science fiction - people who want to make Star Trek."
Will Sjorensen, creator of Star's End said "It was the fans who, after the cancellation of the original series in 1969, keep the torch burning all the way through to the release of the motion pictures and The Next Generation. It is only natural that we carry that torch forward now until the next series -- and there will be a next series, make no mistake -- is developed and released."
"If you're a Star Trek fan, you're disappointed right now." says Jay Everington, who's been given the task of continuing the cancelled Star Trek Enterprise for a virtual 5th, 6th, and 7th seasons - the standard run of a Star Trek series since The Next Generation went off the air in 1994. "You're either disappointed with the cancellation of ENTERPRISE, or you're disappointed with the direction the powers that be have taken Trek in over the past few years. We aim to change that, and to show that quality Trek doesn't have to come out of a Paramount studio." The project's main page is located at http://www.virtulstartrek.com.
